As far as users storing things locally on their Desktop or My Docs.forget it.you'll never win that war.all you can do is just keep pounding it home to stop doing it and hope that eventually some of them figure it out. The shortcuts becomes the one-stop-shop for all the files. Let everything else branch off from there. Point it at the File Server if there is only one file server.or better yet point it at the DFS Root. Just have one shortcut on the All Users Desktop.just one. Home is where they go at the end of the day when they leave, and that is good enough. Just forget about the word "home" and be done with it. I would dump the whole concept of a "home" drive or location. I think you are going to have to accept the idea that you are not going to be able to mirror the current experience very well.the current experience seemed like a bad experience anyway and doesn't foster improved thinking from the users. It was a matter of getting users to stop thinking about things being on a "drive" somewhere and to start thinking of things being in a "location". We have been Mapped Drive "free" for over 10 years because even 10+ years ago I thought they were a bad idea. We are just trying to mirror the current experience as best as possible.I agree completely with getting rid of any and all mapped drives. We actually have the libraries married to their Home Drives, with a couple exceptions that we can't sort out why the redirects aren't working.

The %homepath% will return the full path to your home directory while %homedrive% will return the root of the drive where your home directory resides.

The variable you should try is %homepath% instead of %homedrive%. My suggestion is moving the home directory back to its defaults and replacing it with the folder redirection feature.īut if you still need the link to your home directory, please notice that I have updated my first post. And this approach was baptized as "the best practice". To make things more comfortable for users, techs started redirecting user Documents to the same location so that the default saving location for Office coincided with the location of user documents. So when home directories were moved to the network, users noticed that Microsoft Office was always pointing to the home directory as the default file saving location.

Now the idea behind moving home directories to the network was to centralize and allow users to carry their environments with them (just like roaming profiles but don't confuse them just because their default location was the same). The default location was in the local user profile folder (C:\users\max). Home directories were designed for multi-user environments, where each user could have a separate profile and separate "runtime environment".

Again, if you are going to have your home drive on the network, then Windows WILL need a drive letter for it.

I suggest you move the home directory back to local and use Folder Redirection for their Desktop and Documents instead. We are just trying to mirror the current experience as best as possible.
